Activities: Explore some highlights of Duong Lam Ancient Village such as Mong Phu Temple, the Ancient Citadel of Son Tay, the communal houses and Mia Pagoda.
Our driver and guide will pick you up at about 8 am from your hotel in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. From here we will drive west of Hanoi for about 1.5 hours to start our tour of Duong Lam Ancient Village.
Our first stop is the Ancient Citadel of Son Tay. The city has a strong military history due to its proximity to the impassable Red River, and the glorious citadel, built by King Minh Mang in 1822, is one of many areas of defence in the region.
We continue northwest to Duong Lam Ancient Village, a bastion of ancient Vietnamese farming culture. The tiny alleys and red laterite buildings will transport you back to a simpler time in Vietnamese history; one without modern complexities. Mong Phu Temple will be the first attraction; passing through the original village gate that was built in devotion to Duong Lam’s kings is a special feeling.
After visiting some more ancient houses and talking to the locals that live in them, we will sit down for lunch within the laterite walls of Duong Lam.
With our stomachs full, we will cycle the quiet paths to Mia Pagoda, constructed in the early 15th century and featuring 287 statues differently sized statues. Among these, the statue of Buddha in the Himalayas and the Eight Deities of Vajra sit underneath the ancient bell and bronze gong.
Our last stop will be a historical one to the communal houses of Ngo Quyen and Phung Hung, each built over a thousand years ago to honor two national heroes who were born here and helped to claim Vietnamese independence against the Chinese.
