Swap the frantic activity of bustling Ho Chi Minh City for a bicycle in the countryside. This Cu Chi Tunnels by Bicycle and Boat Full Day tour shows you the often-overlooked beauty of Cu Chi along with its very prominent history for its pivotal role during the American War. We arrive at Cu Chi District via a sleek, modern speedboat along the winding Saigon River, at which point we jump onto our bikes and head around an area that was once littered with bombs, just about 55km to the northwest of Ho Chi Minh City. Our well-versed and friendly guide will show us interesting facets of the local area, as well as translating the stories of locals who grew up in this once-ravaged land. After lunch, we spend the early afternoon in the historically vital and architecturally genius Cu Chi Tunnels before heading back to Ho Chi Minh City via bike and boat.

Itinerary

Cycling to Cu Chi Tunnels

Activities: Cycling 30km through exotic jungle and exploring the Cu Chi Tunnels first-hand before heading back to Ho Chi Minh City.

The Cu Chi Tunnels by Bicycle and Boat Full Day tour begins as our bus picks you up at your hotel between 07.00 am and 07.30 am (exact time to be disclosed upon booking) and takes you to the pier. From here, we board the speedboat and head northwest along the winding river to Cu Chi.

We have an hour on the luxury boat to absorb the scenery from the Saigon River. We will enjoy a light breakfast during this time and will climb onto our bicycles once we arrive on land.

We will follow small village paths running between thick jungle as we cycle 30km around Cu Chi District, once the site of cautious American soldiers sneaking through the undergrowth. We will pass rubber plantations and small handicraft villages specialising in the making of anything from rice paper to reed mats to pottery. We can stop at any point to chat to the locals about living in what was once one of the most fiercely contested areas of land during the American War.

We will stop for a filling lunch to regain our strength for the afternoon’s activities.

We will arrive at the Cu Chi Tunnels, keeping an eye out for the incredibly well-camouflaged entrances and various trapdoors. Once we locate the entrance, we will head down into the tunnels to explore the incredible life endured by the Viet Cong here. We navigate through living quarters, meeting rooms, infirmaries and many places to store ammunition.

We head outside and try the humble meal of cassava root that provided the Viet Cong with energy throughout the years they spent in the tunnels.
